I find John Hay to be a very interesting window into what was going on in the latter half of the 19th century in America. His life alone is fascinating. He served as a very young secretary to President Lincoln, became a diplomat and journalist, became wealthy upon marriage, and died as Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a gifted, but not a great, writer. This is the best of his writings, in my view. It is a series of short essays on things that caught his attention while he was in Spain - bullfights, the heavy influence the Catholic Church and cultural history, the oppressiveness of monarchy, a nascent republicanism, and the novelist Cervantes. It is an interesting, if not riveting, read.

Castilian Days John Hay 9781117870663 Books Reviews

This long-forgotten book was published in 1875, and was written by the American ambassador to Spain 1867-68. John Hay was Lincoln's private secretary, and he was the Secretary of State under McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt. It was Hay who was responsible for the treaty ending the Spanish-American War. This book deals with his impressions of Spain while he was ambassador. His rather narrow mind saw vice in the very faces of Catholic priests. There was a later, illustrated edition.
